How it works
What counts as what
A word is any run of characters between spaces, tabs or line breaks, so “state-of-the-art” is one word and “3.5” is one word.
A sentence ends at a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark; several in a row (“?!” or “...”) end one sentence. A paragraph is a block of text separated from the next by an empty line.
Characters count everything you typed, spaces and line breaks included. “No spaces” drops every kind of whitespace.
Reading and speaking time
Reading time assumes 200 words a minute and speaking time 150, both rounded up. Under a minute, the time is shown in seconds.
minutes = words ÷ 200 (reading), words ÷ 150 (speaking)
Most used words
Words of three or more letters are counted without regard to case, with punctuation trimmed from their ends. Ties are listed alphabetically.
