How it works

Write in Markdown, read it formatted

You type plain Markdown on the left and the formatted text appears on the right. Switch the view to Write for the editor alone or Preview for the formatted text alone. The preview follows GitHub-flavoured Markdown: headings, lists, task lists, quotes, code blocks, tables, links and images.

The toolbar and shortcuts insert the Markdown for you. Ctrl or ⌘ with B, I, E and K make bold, italic, inline code and a link; Ctrl/⌘ Shift X strikes through. Ctrl/⌘ Alt 1 to 6 set a heading level and Ctrl/⌘ Alt 0 a plain paragraph. Ctrl/⌘ Shift 7, 8 and 9 make a numbered list, a bullet list and a quote. Enter continues a list, Enter on an empty item ends it, and Tab or Shift+Tab indent list items.

Focus while you write

Writing settings can highlight the sentence or the paragraph you are in, dim every other paragraph, and keep the line you type on in the middle of the screen (typewriter scrolling). Block marks in the margin show what each block is (¶ paragraph, H2 heading, • list, “ quote, { } code) with its words or characters if you want them.

Full screen hides everything but the page; the toolbar fades after a few seconds without the mouse and comes back when you move it. Esc leaves.

Saving and exporting

The draft and your settings are kept in this browser's local storage and come back when you return. Download .md saves the Markdown (Ctrl/⌘ S does the same), Download .html saves a standalone page with simple print styles, Copy formatted puts rich text on the clipboard for pasting into email or a document, and Print opens your browser's print dialog, where you can save a PDF.
