How it works
The notation
Recipes are written in ClaraScript, delphi.tools’ plain-text notation. A line on its own is a step (fry | 2 min), and lines under it starting with - are what goes into it (- garlic: 2 cloves). Text after a | is a detail. A step written after / on an ingredient line is a preparation of that ingredient (- garlic: 2 cloves / slice).
= name gives a step a name, and @ name brings that step into a later one. x marks what is thrown away, > adds a numbered note, and a blank line starts a new group of steps. title:, serves: and units: may open the recipe.
How the table is drawn
The table follows the layout Michael Chu introduced on Cooking for Engineers: ingredients sit in the left column, each step spans the rows of everything that goes into it, and steps run rightwards until the last one, which spans the whole recipe. Above it are the title, a combined shopping list (the same ingredient used twice is added up) and the notes.
Tap a step to cross it off while you cook. Problems such as a name used twice or a group of steps that is never used are listed under the editor with their line number.
Scaling and units
With serves: set, the stepper scales to a number of people; without it, it multiplies the whole recipe. Quantities with a known unit are scaled and, in Metric or Imperial, converted and rounded to kitchen sizes (tablespoons to cups, grams to kilograms). Counts round to halves, so 3 eggs times 1.5 is 4½. Oven temperatures and pan sizes in the steps are converted too.
factor = people ÷ serves
