How it works

Spelling and reading back

Spell replaces every letter and digit with its word from the chosen alphabet, separated by spaces, and marks each space in your text with a slash. Characters with no word, such as punctuation, are kept as they are.

Read does the reverse: each spelling word becomes its letter, a slash becomes a space, and case or a missing hyphen (Xray, X-RAY) does not matter. Auto reads when the input is at least two words and every one is a spelling word; otherwise it spells.

The three alphabets

NATO is the international radiotelephony spelling alphabet used by ICAO, the ITU and NATO, with its official spellings Alfa and Juliett. DIN 5009 (2022) is the current German standard, which spells with city names. German 1996 is the older DIN 5009 list of first names (Anton, Berta, Cäsar) many people still use. Both German lists include Ä, Ö, Ü and ß.

Flags, semaphore and Morse

Each letter is also shown as its flag from the International Code of Signals, hoisted in order with its spelling word below, and in the chart with its semaphore position and its Morse code. Pressing a letter in the chart adds it to the text.
