How it works
Where the sounds come from
Each word is looked up in a pronunciation dictionary of American English that loads in your browser: a small one of common words first, then a larger one of about 5 MB for rarer words. The dictionary’s phone symbols are converted to IPA, with stress marks placed before the stressed syllable.
A word that is not in the dictionary is guessed from its spelling and is marked as a guess. Names, new words and unusual spellings are the ones most likely to be wrong.
Editing a word
Press a word in the result to open its symbols. Swap a consonant or vowel for another, insert one, remove one, or change the stress mark, using the lists of IPA consonants and vowels. An edited word keeps your changes when you keep typing elsewhere in the text.
The counters show how many words came from the dictionary and how many were guessed. Copy gives the IPA text, and download saves it as ipa.txt.
